So, you want to major in music?
We have many students who have gone onto careers in music. In an effort to make sure that our students leave HHS with the necessary set of skills to not only survive, but excel in the field of music, this page has been developed to provide them with information on what they need to be doing at the high school level.
Prioritize Practice and Fundamentals: Regularly practice scales, long tones, rudiments, and other fundamentals. This is crucial for improving your skills for auditions.
Seek Out Additional Instruction and Performance Opportunities: Take private lessons with a specialist on your instrument to build a strong foundation. Audition for Regionals and All-State and participate in as many ensembles as possible to gain diverse experience.
Develop a Well-Rounded Musical Skill Set: Go beyond your primary instrument. Learn to play the piano, take music theory classes, and practice singing and sight-reading. These skills are often required for music majors and are vital for your overall musical development
Embrace Self-Evaluation and Feedback: Record your playing to hear how your truly sound. Ask teachers and other musicians for constructive criticism and use it to improve your performance.
Prepare Thoroughly for Auditions: Practice performing your audition pieces with others to build confidence and overcome nerves. Be ready to play contrasting styles of music, sight-read, and demonstrate your proficiency in scales and other required skills.
Understand the Reality of a Music Major: A music major is a full-time commitment that extends beyond just playing in an ensemble. Be prepared for rigorous schedule of extensive practice, early morning theory classes, and continuous study.
